Thankyou to my cousin in South Africa, Mike Hodgson, for the hippo photos taken at Okavango Delta, Botswana and Chobe National Park.

A love of food and a love of country, both old and new, is what inspired me to create The Fat Hippo.

Hippos eat all night, then spend their days relaxing, digesting and socialising.

I am a fourth generation South African, now proud to be Australian. My fondest memories are of the numerous occasions, my sister and I watched and helped our Grandmothers in their kitchens, preparing a variety of ‘real food’, that often required patience and considerable preparation. Those precious times together were filled with fun and laughter and so in this way the joys, as well as the basic training and techniques of cooking were learnt.

Each of the Grannies had different skills and of course their ‘secret’ recipes. Both were excellent cooks and well known for ‘putting on’ superb dinner parties.

Wherever possible my selection of products are made from locally grown produce. They are made the ‘old fashioned way’, by avoiding the use of artificial flavours, preservatives and colours.

To share with you the diversity of flavours and aromas that are loved in both countries is a privilege and a pleasure.

Please enjoy!

Elizabeth
